Happy Ending/Beginning

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

We have met many wonderful foster parents over the years. There should be a special award for people who take children into their homes, treat them as there own and then turn them over to their birth or adoptive parents. This little boy was with his foster mother for four years-long enough for them both to be attached. He was adopted into a wonderful family which keeps in close contact with his foster parent He is happy, well adjusted and has a big smile for everyone. Does it get better than this?

The Feel of Summer is in the Air…

Monday, May 10th, 2010

and I saw my first mosquito of the season yesterday in the back yard. He/she was huge but very slow. However, I am certain that his smaller, more nimble compatriots will be here soon to make our Alaskan summer extra special. We just received “Junior Buzz Off,” a safe and natural bug repellent for children. It is made by Alaskans, for Alaskans, is deet free with no artificial chemicals. Please note that we also carry mosquito netting, Pea Pod tents by Kidco, backpacks and lots of other helpers to make our Alaskan summer comfortable and fun.

Remember your Mom

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Some of you may not know that Junior Towne is approaching its 54th anniversary. My Mother started the store in 1956 out of an apartment downstairs below our living quarters. Fireweed Lane was a dirt road and our section was in Spenard, a separate entity from the town of Anchorage. I grew up observing a very vibrant woman making her way in business when women did not normally become entrepreneurs. As the business blossomed, my Father joined her in running things. We added on in 1962 and “The Little Cuties Shop” became “Junior Towne.” Our family lived in an apartment behind the store and the Junior Towne employees and customers became literally an extension of our family. Many famous Alaskans came through our doors and we helped all Alaskans who needed our assistance, even if it meant opening early, late or on Sundays. I have always admired the tenacity of my parents through the many ups and downs that you experience over the course of many years in the retail environment.

In 1980 my Mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She died 6 years later when she was 63. I was privileged to call her Mother. To all of you  with Mothers who are still here, call them and tell them you love them. Spend some time with them and show them that you care. Time passes too fast and you never know what tomorrow will bring.

“Mother Love is the fuel that enables a normal human being to do the impossible.”  -Marian C. Garrietty

iParenting Media Awards Program

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Every so often we get asked about banners or stickers on so many of the products we sell which say “iParenting Media Award Winner.” A few of our products that carry this award that come to mind are the Boo-Bunnie Ice Pack, Balboa Adjustable Sling, Swaddle Me by Kiddopotomus, and the Baby Briefcase (keep’s baby’s paperwork in one place.) These award winners are always innovative products that fill a needed niche. The iParenting Media Awards Program seeks to provide a credible and objective method of determining outstanding products in the marketplace. We really pay attention when we see this award as it is a great tool in helping determine our product mix here at Junior Towne. Just thought that you should know!
