The Holy Grail of Parenting Wisdom

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Sometimes you run across something that rings so true that you have to pass it on. The March 26 Wall Street Journal published an excerpt from a blog by Amy Henry of www.wholemama.com. The article is about contradictory advice given to parents regarding raising their children and titled “The Holy Grail of Parenting Wisdom.” I don’t agree with all the articles in her blog but this one struck a chord. Check it out at www.wholemama.com.

Earthquake Day

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Those of us of a certain age commemorate March 27 as “Earthquake Day.” The Big Earthquake of 1964 etched indelible memories for all of us who were here. That year, March 27 was also Good Friday and Anchorage schools were out for the day. The Earthquake lasted for five minutes and was recorded at 9.2 on the Richter scale. There were many sad, scary and “just missed” tales to tell after that afternoon. Junior Towne was filled with families selecting their Easter best in the store. One little boy, the member of a prominent Anchorage family (we won’t name any names), was being quite a pill, not wanting to try on the suit his mother had selected for him. She finally got him to go in the boys dressing room downstairs to see how it fit.   She closed the door and went to the cash register when the Earthquake started. The boy spent the entire Earthquake in the dressing room. (Please remember that no one could even stand up with the shaking going on.) The boy’s first words when the quake was over were “Mom, I didn’t do it.”

We’ve been here a long time (53 years) and have a lot of tales to tell. We really enjoy being a unique part of Alaska.

Sometimes the Easter Bunny Needs a Little Help…

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

We understand that Easter is fast approaching and the Easter Bunny has been scratching his ears wondering what non sugary delights are available for Easter baskets. Please remind him that we have a great selection of basket stuffers that will surprise and delight everyone on his list.

One of the things that the Easter Bunny was famous for at our house was leaving a bunch of carrots (greenery still on) in bed with our little ones on Easter morning. That way we all knew that the Bunny had been there and left a great basket full of surprises. My chickadees have flown the coop now but I thought that I would pass a fun tradition along.

SLING ALERT

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

One of the great things about belonging to a group of independently owned children’s stores is that you get new information “hot off the press” and then the opinions of all the owners. This just came over the internet regarding slings. It sounds like the industry wants standards as there is a concern with potential suffocation, especially with home made, “bag style” slings. For more on this, go to www.hotslings.com/slingsafetyrelease. Another great site for the proper positioning of a baby in a sling is TheBabywearer.com.

Britax Blink Strollers Special

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

If you need a good traveling stroller or just a good portable stroller for throwing into the back of the car, the Britax Blink is for you. Regularly they are $150 but for a limited time Britax is letting us take $50 off! (We’ve made them $99.95 just to make things interesting!) Quantities are limited and the early bird gets the deal!

Lelli Kelly

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

We just got the cutest selection of Lelli Kelly shoes for girls that we have ever seen! I have two wonderful boys. However, one of the advantages of working at Junior Towne is that occasionally I get to choose some outrageously glam  little girl things. There are a number of companies that do this well, but Lelli Kelly is one of the best! They have even sent us jewelled, pink “cell phones” filled with little girl “makeup” to give away with each Lelli Kelly purchase. Does it get better than this?

Co-ed Baby Showers on the Rise!

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

We think it’s great that Dad’s are becoming more and more involved with caring for their babies. With this we have noticed that there has been a real increase in the number of co-ed baby showers. They are not just for moms anymore! There seems to be a real dearth on the market of advice for dads and great shower gifts just for him. We have found the “Daddy’s Tool Bag” to be a practical and fun gift for the the new Dad.
The diaper bag itself is a masculine design of a heavy cordura water repellent fabric and the kit contains an instructional DVD, changing mat, information card (who to call if something comes up) and a packing list (organized and out the door in no time!) It seems to me that all diaper bags should come with these essentials. At any rate, the Daddy’s Tool Bag is a great idea.
