Declaration of Indepentents
Tuesday, June 30th, 2009Recently a friend sent me an article about how much the locally owned businesses contribute to the economy and how we can save the brick and mortar stores that our nation is built on. Did you know that for every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national chain, only $43 stays here. Spend it online and nothing comes home. Donations to small auctions supporting local projects, and volunteers for schools, community organizations, and church groups all depend on “the locals.” The homogenization of our world has begun. Aren’t we lucky to have a a few pockets of plucky independents to stir things up and make things more interesting?
With this in mind, I highly recommend going to www.the350project.net to see what you can do to help our nation’s “independents. Have a safe and joyful fourth of July!
